At Sankofa Psychological Services in downtown Chicago, we provide extensive neuropsychological testing and evaluations for all age groups – children, teens, and adults.

Neuropsychological Assessments for Children

Children are often referred to Sankofa by parents, teachers, doctors, or therapists for neuropsychological testing. A neuropsychological assessment examines your child’s cognitive functioning functioning. Results of the evaluation are used to indicate the best treatment options available for your child as well as determine if interventions or accommodations are necessary in the school setting.

Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive assessments are given to children to determine the impact of intellectual ability, academic skills, behaviors, and cognitive functioning on academic and psychological functioning. The results of the assessment assist in diagnoses and treatment of normal and abnormal developmental, educational, medical, psychiatric, and neuropsychological difficulties.

Referrals are commonly made for the following:

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Educational Accommodations
  • Learning Difficulties:
  • Developmental Reading Disorder
  • Mathematics Disorder
  • Writing Disorder/Dysgraphia
  • Speech/Language and Communication Disorders
  • Elimination Disorders
  • Complex Medical Conditions
  • Concussion
  • Traumatic Brain Injury

Additionally, Sankofa psychologists can screen for Autism Spectrum Disorders to determine if further testing with an Autism Spectrum Disorder specialist is necessary.

Adult Neuropsychological Assessments

Mental Health Testing

Cognitive Testing

Neurologists and primary care physicians often refer clients who are experiencing problems with memory, attention, or learning to complete cognitive testing to get a better understanding of how a medical or neurological disorder is impacting cognitive functioning. The results of the cognitive tests are used to provide recommendations and available treatment options to you and your family that are geared toward optimizing quality of life across work, home, and community settings.

Sankofa offers the option of combining cognitive testing with emotional tests to determine how these factors interact and impact functioning.

Referrals are commonly made for the following:

  • Adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD
  • Educational and Career Accommodations
  • Dementia (now called Major Neurocognitive Disorder) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (now called Minor Neurocognitive Disorder)
  • Complex Medical Conditions
  • Concussion or Post-Concussive Syndrome
    Traumatic Brain Injury
    Psychogenic Amnesia
    HIV/AIDS related cognitive decline
