Reactive Attachment Disorder

When children have experienced transitions or turmoil from a young age, they may have difficulty developing normal family and peer relationships. Some children react with heightened anxiety about all relationships. Other children easily attach to individuals.

Often, children show a mix of abnormal attachments. Sankofa’s staff work with empirically and theoretically supported treatments to help children develop a healthier sense of themselves and the supportive people in their lives. Family sessions are common in treatment, as well as individual play therapy and anxiety-reduction skills.
